Mission

The Lieven Gevaert Research Centre for Photography, Art and Visual Culture was founded in 2004. The LGC is a joint collaboration between KU Leuven and UCLouvain. The centre is based both in the Faculty of Arts department at KULeuven and at the Institute of Research in Culture (INCAL) at UCLouvain. We closely collaborate with the research entities deep histories fragile memories (directed by Wendy Morris), Photography Expanded (directed by Liesbeth Decan) and several members of the research unit Intermedia (directed by Nicola Setari) at LUCA School of arts

The aims of the LGC are:

The study of photography, art and visual culture at graduate and PhD level, including PhD’s in Curatorial Research related to this domain. This also includes the realization of applied and contract research on specific projects linked to the topics that we study (photography, art and visual culture).

The dissemination of research and scholarship in order to make it profitable for the community (with an emphasis on organizing exhibitions and other presentational platforms). This includes the organization of conferences, lectures, seminars and workshops.

The publication of important scholarship in the field of photography, art and visual culture, both online (Image & Narrative), in a specialized book series (Lieven Gevaert Series, Leuven University Press), and through indiviual publications. of the LGC-members.

The development of a documentation centre linked with the Rare Books Collection of the KU Leuven, located in the Central Library (Ladeuzeplein Leuven).
