About > Mission Statement
Named after the pioneer of the photography industry in Belgium, Lieven Gevaert (founder of the Agfa-Gevaert Group), the Centre for Photography aims at studying the art of photography in a broad interdisciplinary and international field.
The main goals of the Centre are:
the study of photography as an artistic medium at graduate and PhD level (specific attention hereby is paid to the support of practice-led PhD’s in creative photography)
the organization of conferences, lectures, readings and workshops for various audiences (ranging from the academic public to the wider audience)
the dissemination of its research and scholarship in order to make it profitable for the whole community (with a strong emphasis on both the organization of exhibits and the development of new approaches and strategies via ICT)
the creation and development of a specialized documentation centre linked with the Rare Books collection of the University
the publication, both online and in a specialized book series, of important scholarship in the field (with special interest for a reprint policy of classic material)
the realization of applied and contract research on specific projects linked to the photographic medium or its relations with other media
the guest curatorship of exhibitions
The Lieven Gevaert Centre is a joint collaboration between the K.U.Leuven and the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL). It is based in the Faculty of Arts and the Central Library of the K.U.Leuven.
